One of her father’s associates sees Charlotte to the ship where she is suppose to met up with two other American families traveling back to Rhode Island. Unfortunately, circumstances change for the two other families so Charlotte is forced to make the trip alone. During the voyage Charlotte meets with many challenges. Eventually becoming a part of the crew.
Analysis:
I had hard time with my willing suspension of disbelief with the storyline. A girl traveling alone on merchant ship across the Atlantic Ocean in 1832 is questionable. Her transformation from lady to sailor,I just could not believe. I realize that it would be fun and incredibly challenging to work the ship like Charlotte does but it would never have happened. It is too big of a social jump for Charlotte and the crew.

Returning from Britain in 1832 to her family in Rhode Island, 13-year-old Charlotte tangles with a tyrannical sea captain and his mutinous crew. In the book’s first half, Charlotte paints a painfully chilling self-portrait of a girl brainwashed by her father into acceptance of male, and class, authority.(Kirkus Reviews, September 15, 1990)

It may have been brain washing but it was deeply ingrained in all parts of society. I know I am a killjoy but I just could not get over this incredible change in class and social expectations. The adventure and mystery portions of this tale are exciting. I can see if you are interested in high seas adventure this book could be quite fun.
